What is Endodontics?

Endodontics, commonly known as root canal therapy, involves treating diseases of the pulp and surrounding tissues of a tooth. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, a root canal can save your tooth, preventing the need for extraction and replacement.

Endodontics FAQs

Compromised pulp can lead to painful infections and complications. Removing the inflamed or infected pulp prevents further deterioration and maintains oral health.
Signs you may need a root canal include severe toothache, lingering sensitivity to heat or cold, tooth discoloration, swelling and tenderness in the gums, and a persistent pimple on the gums around the tooth. Visit our office for a consultation to determine if a root canal is needed.
The procedure begins by opening the affected tooth to access the infected pulp. The pulp is removed, the canals are shaped and cleaned, and the tooth is sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. A filling or crown is then placed to restore the tooth structure.
Root canals are no more painful than other dental procedures. Local anesthesia ensures your comfort during the procedure, and any post-treatment soreness is usually mild and manageable.
Expect some sensitivity and tenderness at the site, which can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses. A crown is often needed to prevent the treated tooth from breaking, especially for molars.
